Continuing the topic of the advice we gave at the Spring Games Job Аair 2024 in Helsinki, which brought together talent from various backgrounds, eager to refine their resumes and portfolios under the guidance of industry experts.
Among the attendees were Ben Flatt, our own Talent Acquisition Manager and Juho Salila – Art Manager. They offered feedback and tips to shed light on the art of presenting yourself effectively in a competitive job market. We asked them what advice they would recommend to someone looking at tweaking their resume or reshaping their portfolio to stand the best chance of standing out amongst the crowd.
Here were Juho Salila’s findings:
- Punctuality and Preparation: Being on time and having everything organized before the review session demonstrates professionalism and respect for the reviewer’s time.
- Emotional Detachment: Prepare to receive constructive criticism and refrain from becoming emotionally attached to your work. It’s essential for growth and improvement.
- Quality Over Quantity: Showcase your best pieces rather than flooding your portfolio with subpar work. A cohesive and curated collection speaks volumes about your skills and aesthetic.
- Receptiveness to Criticism: Learn to accept feedback gracefully. Constructive criticism is an opportunity for growth and refinement.
- Clarity and Conciseness: Avoid over-explaining or making excuses for your work. Let your art speak for itself while remaining open to discussion.
- Diverse Representation: Aim for a diverse portfolio that showcases your versatility and range as an artist. Variety adds depth and interest to your body of work.
- Minimalism in Design: Embrace simplicity and clarity in your portfolio layout. A clutter-free presentation allows your artwork to shine without distractions.
- Quantity of Material: Ensure your portfolio includes an adequate number of pieces to provide a comprehensive overview of your skills and style.
Ben and Juho said it’s really important to present your ideas well and make sure they’re easy to understand, especially when there’s a lot of other people trying to do the same thing.
